Christopher Bell began his film making career in high school. He won a Sony/AFI Visions of US award for a music video he directed and went on to attend USC’s School of Cinema and Television with a recommendation from Francis Ford Coppola. In 2000 he created an anti-smoking themed short film, Billy Jones, which won him Best Director at the Yahoo! Film Festival and New Orleans Film Festival.
In 2008 Bell created Bigger, Stronger, Faster*, a documentary about the use of anabolic steroids as performance-enhancing drugs in the US. Bell and his brothers were all athletes and admired stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Hulk Hogan. When Bell discovered that not only Hulk Hogan admitted to the use of steroids, but also his own brother, he decided steroids, and America's win-at-all-cost culture and its relationship to steroids, would be the focus of his next project.
Chris joined ThinkTalk Host Zack Sherwood to discuss his film Bigger, Stronger, Faster and answer some student questions on being a first time director. Chris talked about the challenges of filming such an intimate family portrayal, including his brother's struggles with steroids and how his parents dealt with the issue. He also discussed the finer points of pitching the idea for his documentary and how he got the film distributed. This interview was filmed in the Spring of 2008.
